History of Redis
Redis stands for Remote Dictionary Server. It is an open-source, in-memory data store that is widely
used as a database, cache, and message broker. Redis was created in 2009 by Salvatore Sanfilippo, an
Italian developer, who originally built it to improve the performance of a real-time analytics
project. Its ability to handle data extremely fast made it very popular among developers and
large-scale applications worldwide.
In 2011, an Israeli company named Garantia Data recognized
Redis's growing importance and began working on commercial services around it. The company was
founded by Israeli entrepreneurs Ofer Bengal and Yiftach Shoolman. Garantia Data later changed its
name to Redis Labs and eventually to simply Redis, aligning its identity closely with the product.
This company played a major role in scaling Redis for enterprise use, contributing significantly to
its development and cloud offerings.
Although Redis has expanded globally, its core research
and development remain centered in Tel Aviv, Israel. With millions of users and high adoption across
the tech industry, Redis is now considered one of the most reliable and high-performance data
platforms, with deep roots in the Israeli tech ecosystem.
