History of Appwrite
Appwrite is an open-source Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) platform that helps developers build secure
and scalable applications quickly by offering pre-built backend features like authentication,
databases, storage, functions, and more. The idea behind Appwrite was to simplify backend
development so developers could focus more on building great user experiences without managing
complex infrastructure.
Appwrite was founded in 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel, by software engineer
Eldad Fux. What started as a personal side project quickly gained attention from the global
developer community due to its self-hosted, developer-friendly approach. As adoption grew, Appwrite
received funding from major investors, including a $27 million Series A round in 2022, helping it
scale its team and further improve the platform.
Although Appwrite has grown internationally,
its roots and core development are based in Israel, making it part of the growing wave of
Israeli-founded open-source tech companies shaping global developer tools.
