History of Chartboost
Chartboost, founded in 2011 by Peter O’Broin and Sean Fanning, began as a mobile advertising network specifically targeting in-app advertising for mobile games. The company quickly became a leading platform for mobile game developers to monetize their apps, offering a robust platform for interstitial ads, video ads, and other ad formats. Chartboost distinguished itself with its focus on providing game developers with control over the advertising experience, including advanced targeting and analytics tools.
In its early years, Chartboost grew rapidly, attracting major game developers and publishers to its platform. It expanded its services to include programmatic advertising and introduced mediation tools that allowed developers to optimize ad revenue by working with multiple ad networks simultaneously. The company’s success can also be attributed to its focus on offering a direct and transparent connection between advertisers and publishers, bypassing middlemen and offering higher revenue shares to developers.
In 2014, Chartboost expanded its business by launching Chartboost Exchange, an automated marketplace for advertisers to bid for ad placements in mobile games. The platform evolved further through partnerships with major gaming companies, integrations with other tools, and a continued emphasis on innovation. In 2019, Chartboost was acquired by the social media giant, Twitch, allowing it to further integrate its services into Twitch's own mobile and gaming strategies. Despite the acquisition, Chartboost continued to operate as an independent brand, serving the mobile game industry with its suite of ad monetization and marketing solutions.
