History of SIG Sauer

SIG Sauer traces its origins to 1853 in Switzerland when it was founded as Schweizerische Waggonfabrik (Swiss Wagon Factory) to produce railway cars. In 1864, the company transitioned into firearms manufacturing and was renamed Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (SIG). One of its earliest successes was the SIG P210, a highly regarded military pistol. Over the years, SIG became known for precision engineering and innovative firearm designs, supplying weapons to the Swiss military and international markets.

In the 1970s, SIG partnered with German firearms manufacturer J.P. Sauer & Sohn, forming SIG Sauer to expand into the U.S. market. This collaboration led to the development of popular models like the SIG P220 and P226, which gained recognition for their reliability and performance in law enforcement and military applications. By the late 20th and early 21st centuries, SIG Sauer had grown into a global firearms leader, with a strong presence in the U.S. and a reputation for producing high-quality pistols, rifles, and suppressors.
