History of Microsoft OneDrive
Microsoft OneDrive is a cloud storage service launched by Microsoft in 2007. Initially called
'Windows Live Folders,' it was designed to allow users to store and share files online. It became a
part of the Windows Live suite of online services and was later rebranded to OneDrive in 2014,
following the discontinuation of the 'Windows Live' brand. The rebranding marked a shift towards
integrating OneDrive with other Microsoft services, including Windows 10, Office 365, and Microsoft
365, making it a more seamless experience for users across various platforms.
Over the years,
OneDrive has evolved with numerous updates aimed at enhancing its usability, storage capacity, and
integration with other services. For example, in 2016, Microsoft introduced the 'Files On-Demand'
feature, allowing users to access their files without taking up storage space on their devices. The
service has also seen improvements in security with the introduction of features like personal
vaults and two-factor authentication. Today, OneDrive is widely used for both personal and business
purposes, offering features like collaborative document editing, advanced sharing options, and
automatic file backup across devices.
