History of Contrex

Contrex mineral water dates back to 1760, when Dr. Charles Bagard, physician to King Louis XV, discovered the natural spring in Contrexéville, France. The area quickly became known for its health benefits, and in 1774, the first thermal spa was established. By 1861, the water was officially recognized as natural mineral water, and in 1903, it gained health endorsements from the French Ministry of Health and the Academy of Medicine. In 1908, the first bottling factory opened, allowing Contrex water to reach a wider market.

A major turning point came in 1953 when Perrier acquired the brand, followed by its first advertising campaigns in 1954. In 1976, the brand name was simplified to just “Contrex.” In 1992, Perrier and with it, Contrex became part of Nestlé Waters, a division of Nestlé S.A., which helped expand its reach internationally. By 1998, production had reached around 500 million bottles annually. In recent years, the brand has diversified its offerings, including the launch of “Contrex Green” flavored and infused waters in 2019, while continuing to highlight its mineral-rich composition and health benefits.
