History of Rovio

Rovio Entertainment, founded in 2003 in Finland, is best known for creating the wildly popular mobile game Angry Birds. The company was initially a group of students from the Helsinki University of Technology who entered a mobile game competition, leading to the creation of Angry Birds in 2009. The game’s success skyrocketed, marking a turning point for Rovio, which went on to expand its brand into multiple sequels, merchandise, and even an animated movie.

Throughout the years, Rovio diversified its game portfolio and entered other media and entertainment sectors. Despite the global success of Angry Birds, Rovio faced challenges in maintaining long-term growth and innovation, with the mobile gaming market becoming more competitive. The company made efforts to pivot, focusing on other franchises like Bad Piggies and Angry Birds Transformers, but struggled to replicate the initial Angry Birds phenomenon. Rovio’s strategy increasingly leaned towards becoming a multimedia company, encompassing games, TV shows, and movies, although it faced some financial setbacks.

In recent years, Rovio has worked on streamlining its operations and pursuing a more sustainable growth model. The company has embraced a new focus on live games and improving its existing franchises. Rovio's ability to evolve in the face of market challenges continues to shape its legacy as one of Finland’s most influential gaming companies.
