History of Chiquita

Chiquita Brands International is a well-known multinational company specializing in the production and distribution of bananas and other fresh produce. The company's origins trace back to 1870 when Captain Lorenzo Dow Baker began importing bananas to the United States. In 1899, the Boston Fruit Company merged with Minor C. Keith’s banana operations in Central America, forming the United Fruit Company. This company played a significant role in the expansion of banana plantations across Latin America and was influential in regional politics, often criticized for its involvement in 'banana republic' economies.

In 1984, the United Fruit Company rebranded as Chiquita Brands International to modernize its image. Despite facing controversies, including labor disputes and legal issues, Chiquita remained a dominant force in the global banana industry. The company expanded its operations and product lines, focusing on sustainability and ethical sourcing in recent years. In 2015, Chiquita was acquired by Brazilian companies Cutrale and Safra Group, ensuring its continued presence in the global fresh produce market.
