History of Shoppers Drug Mart
Shoppers Drug Mart, established in 1962 by Murray Koffler in Toronto, began as a single pharmacy and
has grown into one of Canada's largest retail pharmacy chains. Originally known for its focus on
providing a broad range of pharmaceutical services, the company evolved to meet the changing needs
of its customers, expanding its product offerings to include health and beauty items, household
goods, and grocery items. Over the decades, Shoppers Drug Mart became known for its convenient
locations and commitment to customer service, helping to establish it as a trusted name in Canadian
retail.
In 2014, Shoppers Drug Mart was acquired by Loblaw Companies Limited, one of
Canada’s
largest food retailers. This acquisition allowed Shoppers Drug Mart to integrate with Loblaw’s
extensive network, enhancing its operational capabilities and expanding its reach across the
country. Under Loblaw's ownership, Shoppers Drug Mart has continued to build on its reputation for
quality and service, while also leveraging Loblaw's resources to offer a wider range of products and
services to its customers. This strategic alignment has solidified Shoppers Drug Mart's position as
a leading retail pharmacy chain in Canada.
