History of Oakley
Oakley was founded in 1975 by Jim Jannard in his garage with just $300. He started by selling
motorcycle grips called the “Oakley Grip,” which became popular for their unique design and better
handling. The brand soon expanded into goggles and eyewear for sports like motocross and BMX,
gaining recognition for its innovation and performance-driven products.
In the 1980s, Oakley
introduced sunglasses designed with advanced materials and optics, quickly becoming a favorite among
athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. Their iconic styles, like the Oakley Frogskins, defined sports
fashion and built a strong identity for the brand. Oakley’s focus on combining technology with style
helped it stand out in the competitive eyewear market.
The company grew into a global leader in
sports performance gear, producing not only eyewear but also apparel, footwear, and accessories. In
2007, Oakley was acquired by Italian-French eyewear giant Luxottica (now EssilorLuxottica), giving
it even greater reach worldwide while maintaining its reputation for innovation and bold design.
