History of Lazada
Lazada is a Southeast Asian e-commerce company founded in 2012 by Rocket Internet, a German incubator. Initially launched in Thailand, it quickly expanded to other countries in the region, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, and Brunei. Its platform allowed consumers to buy a wide variety of products ranging from electronics and fashion to home goods, providing an online shopping experience tailored to the Southeast Asian market.
In 2016, Lazada's operations gained significant traction when it was acquired by Alibaba Group, which invested $1 billion into the platform. This partnership helped Lazada expand its offerings and improve its technology and logistics infrastructure. The acquisition enabled Lazada to integrate with Alibaba’s vast e-commerce ecosystem and leverage its expertise in logistics, payment systems, and data analytics, positioning it as the leading online retailer in the region.
As of today, Lazada remains a dominant force in Southeast Asian e-commerce, continuing to innovate with new services such as Lazada Express, its own logistics arm, and its digital payment system, LazadaPay. It has become a key player in shaping the region's retail landscape, with millions of active users and a wide range of sellers contributing to its expansive marketplace.
