History of BeyondTrust
BeyondTrust was founded in 2006 and provided Least Privilege Management software for the Microsoft
Windows OS, before UNIX vendor Symark acquired BeyondTrust in 2009. In 2009, Symark International, a
Unix privilege management provider founded in 1985, acquired BeyondTrust, a small developer of
Windows privilege solutions for approximately $20 million and they adopted BeyondTrust as the new
company name. This was unusual since typically the acquired company takes the buyer's name, but in
this case Symark chose to rebrand under the BeyondTrust name.
The company continued to grow
through strategic acquisitions throughout the 2010s, expanding its cybersecurity portfolio. In 2011,
BeyondTrust acquired software from Likewise Software, which expanded its portfolio of 'inside
perimeter' security capabilities. The company also made other acquisitions during this period to
strengthen its position in vulnerability management and privileged access management.
In 2018,
the company was acquired by Bomgar, a developer of remote support and PAM software. Similar to the
previous acquisition, Bomgar also adopted the BeyondTrust name after the acquisition was completed.
This merger created what the companies described as the industry's most comprehensive Privileged
Access Management portfolio, combining Bomgar's remote support capabilities with BeyondTrust's
privilege management solutions. Today, BeyondTrust operates as a leading provider of privileged
access management and cybersecurity solutions.
