History of HERE WeGo

HERE WeGo is a mapping and navigation service developed by HERE Technologies, originally known as Nokia Maps. The company was founded in 1985 as Navteq, a mapping data provider. In 2007, Nokia acquired Navteq and rebranded the service as Nokia Maps. The service initially provided basic mapping and navigation features for mobile phones and was seen as a competitor to other mapping services like Google Maps. In 2012, Nokia renamed the platform 'HERE' to represent its vision of a connected world, and it became available on various platforms, including iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.

In 2015, Nokia sold HERE to a consortium of German automakers, including Audi, BMW, and Daimler, which helped accelerate the service's development into an advanced mapping and location platform, with a focus on automotive navigation. Under the new ownership, HERE expanded its offerings, adding features like real-time traffic data, public transport routes, and turn-by-turn navigation. The brand was later rebranded as HERE WeGo, emphasizing its transition to a global mapping solution for consumers, providing accessible, offline, and on-demand navigation services. The app has continued to evolve, focusing on providing seamless navigation for a range of use cases, including walking, driving, and public transport.
