History of Crabtree & Evelyn
Crabtree & Evelyn was founded in 1972 by Cyrus Harvey in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Originally focused on fine soaps sourced from around the world, the brand took inspiration from 17th-century English apothecaries, blending natural ingredients with traditional craftsmanship. Named after John Evelyn, a 17th-century naturalist, and the crabapple tree, the company quickly gained recognition for its botanical-based bath, body, and home products.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Crabtree & Evelyn expanded globally, becoming known for its luxurious hand creams, fragrances, and gift sets. However, changing consumer preferences and increased competition led to financial struggles, resulting in multiple ownership changes and store closures. In 2019, the company shifted to an online-only model, focusing on a modern, minimalist brand identity while maintaining its heritage of botanical skincare and personal care products.
